About The Documentary Titled “The Engineering and Construction Of The Twin Towers”.
It was produced by PBS. Production began in 1987 and the 2 hour program was aired in 1990 in 2 segments, playing on consecutive nights. Only missing the first 20 minutes of the second part, I viewed it on channel 28 in southern California. The first 30 minutes of part “I” was about the history and design development. Curiously the documentary explained its granted purpose as justifying the huge cost overruns the Towers construction had burdened the public with. The excavation and bathtub, the core foundation, the core, the steel and then the repeating process of erecting steel and casting concrete on up to the top and the hat truss. There were curious mentions of factors like the revised plans for the core not being made available until 2 days before work on the core was due to begin as well as the strange security measures inconsistent with what ordinarily were simply construction processes. This was mostly associated with the rebar having the “special plastic coating”.
Part “II” detailed elevators, concrete composition, concrete pumping as well as the stringent security present on the site with a few minutes about WTC 2. It mentioned that WTC 2 had twice as many elevators, combined cell/shearwall sections, and showed a picture of the launch pad at cape canaveral that had been built to test the core base for WTC 2 using the rocket exhaust ports surrounding a center pedestal that would be elevator shafts with door openings to the lobby when used as the base of a tower core rather than a launch pad supporting a massive steel gantry.
